Hidden sources of Soy
Soy protein, present in tofu, edamame, soy sauce and many processed foods.
Where it hides
- "Natural flavor" or "vegetable broth" on ingredient labels — these catch-all terms can legally include soy-derived components
- Soy lecithin in chocolate, margarine, and packaged baked goods — used as a cheap emulsifier in a huge range of processed foods
- Deli meats, hot dogs, and veggie burgers — soy protein is a common filler/binder even in products that read as 'meat'
- Asian sauces beyond soy sauce (teriyaki, hoisin, and some marinades) — these often contain soy even when 'soy sauce' isn't listed by name on a menu
- Protein bars and shakes — soy protein isolate is a common cheap protein source in fitness products
- Canned tuna or fish packed in "vegetable broth" — the broth base is frequently soy-derived
