Hidden sources of Lactose (dairy sugar)
Milk sugar found in dairy. A very common cause of bloating, gas and loose stools.
Where it hides
- Whey protein powders and protein/granola bars — whey is a milk-derived protein concentrate that still carries residual lactose
- Deli meats, hot dogs, and sausages — lactose or milk solids are commonly used as a binder/filler in processed meats
- Cream-based soups, ranch/Caesar dressing, and Alfredo-style sauces — cream or milk powder is used as the base for body and mouthfeel, even in "savory" restaurant dishes
- Non-dairy coffee creamers and flavored coffee creamers — some still list whey, milk, or cream despite the "non-dairy" name; sodium/calcium caseinate is a milk protein rather than the milk sugar lactose, so caseinate alone doesn't make a creamer unsafe for lactose intolerance — check for milk, whey, or cream on the label
- Pills and supplements (prescription and OTC tablets) — lactose is one of the most common inert fillers/binders used in tablet manufacturing
- Instant mashed potatoes, boxed cereals, and bread dough conditioners — milk solids or whey are added for texture and browning, listed in small print, not implied by the food name
