Hidden sources of Polyols (sorbitol / mannitol)
Sugar alcohols in stone fruit, mushrooms and "sugar-free" products.
Where it hides
- "No sugar added" or "keto" packaged desserts, protein bars, and syrups — sugar alcohols like sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, and maltitol are common bulk sweeteners in these products; erythritol shows up too but is a different sugar alcohol that's largely absorbed rather than fermented, so it's typically well tolerated in normal amounts
- Some sugar-free or diabetic-friendly cough syrups and liquid medications — sorbitol is a common liquid-medication sweetener/base
- Restaurant mushroom-based sauces, gravies, and umami broths (even without visible mushroom pieces) — mushroom extract or powder is used as a flavor base
- Pre-cut "cauliflower rice" blends and frozen vegetable medleys — cauliflower is often mixed in as filler even when not the headline ingredient
- Stone fruit in fruit cups, yogurts, or smoothie blends (peach, plum, cherry) — puréed or diced stone fruit isn't always obvious once blended
