Hidden sources of FODMAP: Lactose
The lactose sub-group of FODMAPs (overlaps with dairy intolerance).
Where it hides
- Protein powders and meal-replacement shakes labeled "whey" — whey concentrate (not isolate) retains meaningful lactose, and a single scoop can approach or exceed a typical per-serving threshold on its own
- Milk chocolate and some "dark" chocolates — milk solids add up across servings — a square or two is often fine, but a full bar can cross the dose threshold
- Cream-based soups, sauces, and mashed potatoes served in restaurant-size portions — a small splash of cream is often within tolerance, but a full portion can stack several servings' worth of lactose into one dish
- Stacking several "small lactose" foods in one meal or day — FODMAP tolerance is cumulative — a splash of milk in coffee, a bit of cheese, and a cream sauce can each be fine alone but add up past the threshold together
- Overlap with a general dairy-avoidance list (deli-meat binders, salad dressings/dips, basic "contains milk" identification) — if you're also following a straightforward lactose-avoidance plan, lean on that list for spotting dairy in general — this group's real value is narrower: the dose/gram math that lets you keep some dairy instead of cutting it all
