Hidden sources of Excess fructose
Fruit sugar in excess of glucose — honey, apples, mango, high-fructose syrup.
Where it hides
- High-fructose corn syrup in sodas, packaged baked goods, and condiments (ketchup, BBQ sauce) — it's a cheap sweetener used far beyond obvious "sweet" foods
- "Fruit juice concentrate" or "agave" on ingredient labels — both are concentrated fructose sources marketed as "natural" sweeteners
- Flavored yogurts, granola bars, and energy/sports drinks — fruit purees or concentrates boost sweetness without reading as "fruit" on the front label
- Dried fruit and trail mixes — drying concentrates the fructose per serving well above fresh fruit
- Restaurant glazes, chutneys, and reduction sauces — often built on honey, mango, or apple juice reductions
- Some "natural" or artisan sodas and kombuchas — apple or pear juice is a common base sweetener
