Hidden sources of Eggs
A common allergen and occasional gut irritant.
Where it hides
- Egg wash on breads, pretzels, and pastries — brushed on for shine/browning, not always listed as a filling ingredient
- Fresh or dried egg pasta and ramen noodles — egg is a structural ingredient in many pastas beyond the obvious 'egg noodle' label
- Veggie or plant-based burger patties — egg is sometimes used as a binder even in products marketed as meat alternatives, where shoppers assume 'plant-based' means egg-free by default
- Caesar dressing and some creamy sauces — traditional recipes use raw or coddled egg as an emulsifier
- Foamed cocktails and some specialty coffee drinks — egg white is used to create the foam/texture
- Clarified broths and consommés — egg whites are used to clarify the liquid, then strained out but residue remains
